Origin
Asparagus setaceus plumosus, also known as ornamental asparagus, originally comes from South Africa. It is an evergreen plant that occurs in its natural habitat mainly in deciduous forests and along riverbanks. Asparagus setaceus plumosus was introduced to Europe by the Dutch horticultural industry and has generally become established as a houseplant due to its decorative appearance.

Characteristics
This houseplant is characterised by its fine, feathery needle-like leaves and its extensive growth behaviour. It produces small white or light pink flowers during the summer months, which later develop into red berries. The Asparagus setaceus plumosus can reach a height of 1 to 1.5 metres when fully grown. This plant is prized for its ornamental value, mainly for the visual softness it provides in otherwise harsh urban environments.

Care
Caring for Asparagus setaceus plumosus is comparatively easy. A location with plenty of indirect light and temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius is ideal. To keep the plant healthy, it is recommended to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Dry air can have a negative effect on growth; a relative humidity of between 50 and 60 per cent is recommended. In general, Asparagus setaceus plumosus is rarely attacked by pests, but regular checks for spider mites and thrips, for example, are advisable.
