Origin
The Ficus elastica 'Schrijveriana', also known as the rubber tree from the mulberry family (Moraceae), originates from the regions of Southeast Asia and India. This evergreen tree was brought to Europe in the 17th century, where it became very popular as a houseplant, especially during the Victorian era.
Features
The Ficus elastica 'Schrijveriana' is characterized by its large, glossy, leathery leaves that are dark green with white stripes. The leaves can reach a length of up to 20 to 30 centimeters and are elliptical to oval in shape. The plant has a strong, upright growth habit and can reach a height of 30 meters under ideal conditions.
Care
The Ficus elastica 'Schrijveriana' generally requires little care, but it prefers well-drained soil and plenty of indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. The plant needs moderate watering, and it is important to avoid waterlogging. For optimal growth, a minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius is required. The plant can handle dry air well, but the leaves should be dusted off occasionally to allow for breathing.
