Lubera Saskatoon Saskablue®
Product details
Flowering: Towards the end of April, up to 20 days after the normal serviceberries.
Ripening: By the end of June, ripening occurs after just 7-8 weeks, slightly staggered, yet 60% can be harvested together.
Taste: Sweet, aromatic, with blueberry flavors, also a bit green; one of the very few wild fruits that are directly edible and very delicious. The red-blue color of the fruits, which are 8-15 mm in size, is also beautiful.
Growth/Health: Extremely healthy, upright growth, very stable, no diseases, completely frost-resistant, even at very low temperatures.
Location: Can be planted in any soil, showing good growth even in very calcareous soils.
An indigenous source of health: The Native Americans knew what they were eating. Saskatoons have very high levels of anthocyanins and antioxidants. They are also very rich in calcium and iron. Did the Native Americans use them to combat their late spring fatigue? No, it was too late for that, as the vitamin-rich food only ripened by midsummer! But even in summer, one can certainly use more energy!
Amelanchier alnifolia: The original form of the Saskatoon berry is native to the North American prairie. In Canada, cultural varieties with better growth, flowering, and fruit characteristics have been selected over the past 30 years. The name Saskatoon derives from the Native American name for the shrub.
