Product details
The tradition of raising flags dates back several thousand years. It was introduced by nomadic communities (Drogpa) to ensure luck and prosperity, but it was originally always associated with war. The banners (Ru-dar) found in ancient texts were military flags. 'Ru-' refers to the 'gathering of people' - or the populace - as they move from one place to another. In an archaic sense, this gathering refers to a kind of army. 'Dar-' means flag or banner. During wars, armies used the flag for protection and as a symbol of pride.
The flags took on religious significance in the Bon tradition, and their appearance gradually changed. According to Bon teachings, where mantras are wrapped in five-colored silk and hung high in the mountains, those who see the flags would receive luck and prosperity. Raising Dra-lha (a deity that helps overcome obstacles and enemies) benefits the well-being of all sentient beings and allows the Dharma to thrive and flourish. There are some accounts in ancient texts that illustrate the protective power of prayer flags.
Prayer flags are traditionally hung outdoors in the wind. The wind carries the prayers around the world.
