Technically, the blind rivet consists of two components: the hollow rivet and the rivet mandrel. While screws, clinching, and punched rivets require access to both sides of the component, the special feature of the blind rivet is that only one-sided access to the component is necessary.

During the setting process, the rivet mandrel is pulled by the jaws of the setting device, deforming the hollow rivet until it fits securely in the component as predefined. Finally, the rivet mandrel breaks off at the designated point, the predetermined breaking point, and the remaining mandrel can be sent for recycling. The remaining rivet mandrel is the part of the mandrel that remains in the hollow rivet and can, depending on the application, take on an additional securing function.
