Echeverias are a genus of plants from the family of succulents.
The species of Echeveria that are cared for as houseplants require a bright location with plenty of direct sunlight year-round. If the light conditions are insufficient, the leaves grow misshapen and elongated, and may die off. The best location is a sunny and warm spot by a south-facing window.
No water should come into contact with the leaves of Echeverias, as droplets can leave unsightly spots or even cause rot. Low-growing Echeveria species completely cover the pot and should therefore only be watered from below. They can be placed in shallow saucers filled with water for about an hour, after which the soil should be thoroughly moistened. During the dormant period, from October to February, all Echeveria species should be watered just enough to prevent the soil from drying out.
Rainwater is optimal for watering all Echeveria species, but the plants can also thrive with regular tap water, as long as it is not too hard.
