Product details
If the specimen shown is no longer available, you will receive a Szechuan pepper bonsai that is very similar in shape and form and identical in age, size and price. An exchange is possible if you are not satisfied. Zanthoxylum piperitum is widespread in subtropical Asia, especially in the Himalayas, China, Tibet, Nepal, Japan, Taiwan and Korea. The Szechuan pepper bonsai is characterised by its glossy leaves. They contain an essential oil that smells a little like lemon. Botanically speaking, it is not related to the real pepper (Piper nigrum), but belongs to the citrus family. In Asian cuisine, the dried pulp is often used as a spice. The Szechuan pepper is a dioecious plant, which means that there are male and female specimens. The flowers are small, inconspicuous, greenish to yellow in colour. The fruits are reddish in colour and contain a dark purple to black shiny, 3-4 mm large seed. Care Like any indoor bonsai, the Szechuan pepper likes to be kept outdoors during the summer months. However, it is also possible to keep it in a bright window spot indoors all year round. The pepper tree also needs sufficient light during the darker winter months. The LED plant lamps from Venso, which we have tested on our bonsais, have proven their worth. A large saucer with wet gravel helps against dry heating air and pest infestation. Daily spraying of the leaves (including the underside of the leaves) with a water sprayer is also helpful. Fertilise with a bonsai fertiliser every 10 - 14 days during the growing season and only every 3 - 4 weeks in winter. Shaping For fine branching, regularly cut the shoots back to one or two of the pinnate leaves using bonsai scissors. The leaf arrangement is alternate.
