Product details
The product image of this bonsai is a snapshot. Its condition and appearance change with the seasons: In winter, it is leafless; in spring, the first needle clusters appear; in summer, the bonsai is full of needles and green; in autumn, the colorful needle coloration begins and ends with leaf fall and winter dormancy.
You will receive the specimen shown.
Metasequoia glyptostroboides is native to China. It is one of the few coniferous trees that is deciduous. The dawn redwood is among the largest trees in the world.
The dawn redwood as a bonsai is particularly well-suited due to its excellent pruning tolerance. It can be cut back to old wood and will then produce many buds. The needles turn a bright orange in autumn.
Care
As a garden bonsai, the dawn redwood must be kept outdoors year-round. A location that provides protection from the midday sun is recommended, especially during the summer months. Its delicate needles could be damaged by sunburn. Water abundantly in summer, and only when the soil is dry and the root ball is not frozen in winter. In spring, use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer, and then switch to organic fertilizing until the end of summer. Repot approximately every two years with a strong root cut. Our bonsai soil house mix is suitable as a substrate.
Design
In spring, during new growth, remove all unnecessary buds. The small bud scissors and the narrow concave scissors or the shoot and bud scissors are suitable for this. Continuously trim the shoots back to one to two centimeters. Be careful when wiring, as the usually thin branches can break easily.
