Product details

Ilex crenata, also known as Japanese Holly, is an evergreen plant native to East China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. This bonsai plant is characterized by its robustness and adaptability. It retains its leaves even in winter and requires a partially shaded location. In May and June, small, inconspicuous, whitish-green flowers appear, followed by round, black berries, which make both the leaves and fruits slightly toxic. Caring for the Japanese Holly requires moderate watering, with a bit more water needed during the flowering period. However, waterlogging should be avoided. For optimal growth conditions, a low-lime, acidic soil is recommended, and using special substrates like Kanuma can be beneficial. This plant is hardy but requires additional protection in winter, such as wrapping the pot with a coconut mat. Ilex crenata is also well-suited for pruning, making it an ideal choice for bonsai enthusiasts.
