Tibetan prayer flags. They flutter playfully in the wind on roofs, temples, bridges and sacred springs all over Nepal. Nevertheless, they have a deep meaning for the people who live there. They are a constant reminder of the divine. The mantras and images on the flags are said to bring protection and blessings to the entire universe and all life. Problems or suffering are handed over to the wind for transformation by hanging up a prayer flag so that life can flow again. The colourful flags are symbolic of the five elements. Over time, prayer flags dissolve due to the effects of sun, wind and rain. This is also desirable because it allows the blessing to reach the five elements.
