The origin of the raw material, i.e. whether fossil or renewable raw materials were used in the manufacture of the product, is irrelevant to the biodegradability of plastics. The decisive factor as to whether a material is biodegradable is solely its chemical structure. Only if microorganisms and fungi or their enzymes can break down and completely metabolise the molecules that make up the plastic is it biodegradable. Biodegradable plastics are completely broken down by microorganisms into carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), mineral salts and biomass. Methane (CH4) can also be produced during fermentation. The "Nature Glove" takes 695 days to fully decompose. In comparison: A normal nitrile glove takes around 800 years to fully decompose.
