The origin of the raw materials used in the production of plastics, whether fossil or renewable resources, does not play a role in their biodegradability. The determining factor for whether a material is biodegradable is solely its chemical structure. Only when microorganisms and fungi, or their enzymes, can break down and completely metabolize the molecules that make up the plastic is it considered biodegradable. Biodegradable plastics are fully decomposed by microorganisms into carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), mineral salts, and biomass. Additionally, methane (CH4) can be produced during fermentation. The Nature Glove takes 695 days to fully decompose. In comparison, a standard nitrile glove takes about 800 years to be completely broken down.
