The Pelham bit combines the function of a bridle with the effect of a curb bit. The upper rein exerts pressure on the tongue and the corners of the mouth, while the lower rein increases the leverage and pressure of the chin strap. The mouthpiece is slightly curved to conform to the tongue and create even pressure on the horse's bars and tongue. The thicker mouthpiece is gentler on the corners and bars of the mouth. The pressure generated by the reins is distributed over a larger area. The hard rubber mouthpiece offers a warmer and softer option than stainless steel.
