What does the term "water column" mean? You can imagine that a fabric with a water column value of 2000 mm only becomes waterproof when the water stands 2 meters high on this fabric. In nature, of course, there is not a 2 meter high water column on any tent, so such a high value does not seem necessary at first. However, if you consider that when it rains and there is a strong storm, the water drops are pressed against the tent walls, it quickly becomes clear that such values are not exaggerated. Tests for water tightness are carried out with water columns. A cylinder with a height indication is placed on a piece of cloth and filled with water. The value up to which no water penetrates through the fabric is the water column specification. According to the DIN standard, a value of 1300 mm water column or more is considered waterproof. However, for rain jackets or tents that are also exposed to wind, this value may be too low. A water column of 3000 mm is a value that is sufficient for rain jackets and tents.
