What does the term "water column" mean? You can visualize that a fabric with a value of 2000 mm water column only becomes waterproof when water stands 2 meters high on that fabric. Naturally, no tent is subjected to a 2-meter-high water column in nature, so such a high value may initially seem unnecessary. However, considering that during rain and strong storms, water droplets are pressed against the tent walls, it quickly becomes clear that such values are not exaggerated.

The tests for waterproofness are conducted using water columns. A cylinder with a height specification is placed on a piece of fabric and filled with water. The value at which no water penetrates the fabric is the water column specification. According to DIN standards, a value of 1300 mm water column is considered waterproof. However, for rain jackets or tents that are also exposed to wind, this value may be too low. A water column of 3000 mm is a value that is sufficient for rain jackets and tents.
