Material:

All stainless steels share the characteristic that at least 12% chromium is added to the steel alloy. When in contact with oxygen from surrounding media (air, water, other substances), a thin, transparent layer of chromium oxide, only a few atomic layers thick, forms on the steel surface. This process is also referred to as "passivation." This layer protects the underlying steel from further chemical influences.

If the surface is damaged, this passive layer will automatically regenerate under the influence of oxygen. The regeneration of the passive layer can also be referred to as "self-healing" or a "self-repair mechanism." Thus, regrinding stainless steel is always possible.
