Hollowglide is a large, hollow chainring. The extremely stiff hollow structure reduces weight while maintaining the same strength. This improves power transfer and allows for faster and more precise shifting at the front.

The Hollowtech II technology enables extremely lightweight, hollow crank arms that are manufactured using Shimano's exclusive forging technology to achieve maximum stiffness. In the Hollowtech II crankset, the right crank is firmly connected to the bottom bracket axle, ensuring an optimal balance between maximum stiffness and minimal weight. The externally mounted bottom bracket provides better weight distribution and increased stability, leading to more efficient power transfer.

The development of the Ultegra R8000 Hollowtech II crankset focused on achieving an optimal balance between stiffness and rotational efficiency, as well as low weight and attractive aesthetics.
