The cage magnet in a plastic housing should be administered preventively to all healthy cattle in a timely manner. Its magnetic force is sufficient to collect iron-containing foreign bodies and hold them securely in the cage space.

Hidden foreign bodies in feed, such as nails, wire, and metal splinters, pose a significant risk to non-selective grazing cattle: they can enter the rumen, where they may penetrate the stomach wall during the contractions necessary for mixing and transporting food.

This typically leads to an infection of the abdominal cavity, followed by an inflammatory response. The organs surrounding the rumen can also be traumatized.

The early administration of a magnet to a cow suspected of having ingested foreign bodies can lead to the recovery of the animal within two to three days. If the animal is not treated, the foreign body can migrate and cause peritonitis, which can ultimately result in the total loss of the animal. Preventive administration of a magnet has also proven effective.
