Like spider silk, Vectran is a liquid crystalline polymer. Vectran is spun from the molten liquid polymer Vectra and further processed into a multi-fiber yarn. Both spider silk and Vectran have an enormous tear resistance at minimal weight. These properties are ideal for use as a puncture protection insert in a Continental top tire. A Vectran breaker is lighter, more flexible, and provides more effective protection against cuts than comparable nylon breakers, without affecting rolling resistance.
