Does the iron switch itself off if it is not used for a longer period of time or if you forget to unplug it?

Although this would be welcome for safety reasons and would not require much technology: I'm afraid not. The manual says "Automatic shutdown (only for GC1756, GC1758)", this unit is GC1750.
