Do you actually grate one vegetable or as many as you have room for at the top, e.g. carrots?

There is room for several carrots at the same time and off you go. Simply turn and press the vegetables down with the stopper.
You can add more at any time... Cucumbers, for example, can be sliced in one piece. Wider vegetables such as kohlrabi must of course be cut into pieces beforehand.

Answer: From the top. However, you have to pre-cut the vegetables so that they fit and have a pusher to push them along.
I don't know if I understood the question. Anyway, I cut the vegetables/fruit into pieces before I put them in the top. For example, a large carrot in 2-3 pieces, potatoes whole or in 2 halves...
