The focus on the essentials characterizes the "Suomi" service designed by Finnish artist Timo Sarpaneva. In creating the compact, organic shape from 1976, Sarpaneva was inspired by the round, smooth pebbles found along Finland's coasts. "Suomi" embodies Scandinavian purism for design enthusiasts, being both elegantly crafted and confident. The combination of white porcelain and metal gives "Suomi" its distinctive character. The individual pieces in this collection have been reduced to the truly necessary, making them versatile in use. Timo Sarpaneva was awarded the Gold Medal from Faenza, the highest honor in the porcelain world, for the "Suomi" design. Today, "Suomi" is one of the most successful services from Rosenthal.

The history of the Rosenthal manufactory dates back to 1879 when the now world-renowned company was founded by Philipp Rosenthal in Selb, Bavaria. Within just a few decades, the manufactory was able to excite the design world with interesting and rather traditional porcelain tableware, which is why such tableware is still offered today in the Rosenthal Tradition edition.
