Instead of sewing a basting stitch with a long stitch on the sewing machine, I use the chain stitch of the Baby Lock cover stitch machine. Unpicking the cover stitch is much faster; just pull on the looper thread, and the chain stitch comes undone. No fiddling like with a seam from the sewing machine and no thread remnants in the fabric.
