6. Schlosser Der Bauhof
The Lichterfelde manor consisted mainly of large areas of marshy sand or marshy meadows. All owners who did not live frugally enough went bankrupt and the Lichterfelde manor often changed hands.
The situation only changed when a businessman and land speculator bought the indebted Lichterfelde manor at auction in 1865.
Lichterfelde became Groß-Lichterfelde.
A cadet centre was built on the Mark Brandenburg sand, which served the 'Leibstandarte' in 1933, and during the war years the SS set up a subcamp of the Oranienburg concentration camp for foreign workers on the drained marshy meadows. The inmates of the subcamp in Lichterfelde Süd who were rounded up by the SS were to use their labour to replace German skilled workers who had been drafted as soldiers.
One workplace for the prisoners of the Lichterfelde Süd concentration camp was the construction business next door. Here, the SS coordinated the labour assignments to maintain projects important to the war effort.
A maid worked as a housekeeper in the kitchen of the building shop's villa and for almost two decades she met regularly with her three friends for coffee. The topics the four ladies discussed were relatives, current affairs and events at the building yard.
The closer the end of the Second World War came, the more the National Socialist system crumbled.
The building business survived the Nazi era. It survived the war, the Soviet occupation and reorganised itself at the beginning of the American occupation.
All that remains are the old stories ... with 'déjà vu'.
