June Hayward and Athena Liu could both be rising stars in the literary scene. However, while the Chinese-American author Athena is celebrated for her novels, June leads a life on the sidelines. No one is interested in stories of "just ordinary" white girls, or at least that's how June sees it. When June witnesses Athena die in an accident, she impulsively steals Athena's latest, just-completed manuscript, a novel about the heroics of Chinese laborers during World War I. June revises the work and publishes it under her new pen name, Juniper Song. After all, doesn't this piece of history deserve to be told, no matter who tells it? But now June must keep her secret and figure out how far she is willing to go for it.
