Brunetti is just about to go to bed when Vianello calls him out into the cold November night: a hand is sticking out of a canal. The body is quickly recovered. The Commissario learns by chance who it is. But what enemies could the deceased have had? Since he was in Italy without any identification, the police are left with no leads. It is only when Brunetti delves deep into his own past and recalls the Italy of his student days that he begins to approach the solution.
