Unterm Staub der Zeit

Coming of age in a divided city. Fourteen-year-old Daniel arrives in Berlin in 1958 from his hometown in East Germany, where, as the son of a pastor, he was denied the opportunity to take his Abitur. He moves into a student dormitory in Grunewald, where he also attends high school, and quickly acclimates to his new surroundings. Along with his roommates – all of whom, like him, come from the GDR – he not only attends classes but also explores the city together: as newspaper sellers, they roam the pubs every evening, and when the food at the dormitory is too bland, they head to Aschinger's standing beer hall for pea soup. They experience the revival preacher Billy Graham, who captivates the crowds in Tiergarten, and Bill Haley, who sets the Sportpalast ablaze with excitement.
