There are times when our life is "on hold" and we feel like we have fallen out of the world. Through an illness or the loss of a loved one, through unemployment. Even a joyful event like the birth of a child can throw us off balance. Katherine May calls these times of withdrawal, all too familiar to herself, "winter". And just as everything rests in the winter cold to gather strength for spring, May gives herself over to "hibernation". She travels to Tromsø to see the northern lights, swims in the icy sea, sweats in the sauna and celebrates the winter festival Santa Lucia. She reflects on the essentials and gives herself over to peace and inner contemplation - until she feels ready to go on again with renewed energy.
