Mateusz and Adam, who fought together in the Polish underground against the communist regime and swore "blood brotherhood" there, go their separate ways after its collapse. Mateusz builds a career in domestic politics and eventually becomes the Prime Minister of Poland. Adam moves to Brussels after Poland's EU accession, where he works in the European Commission's Directorate-General for Enlargement. In the dispute over Albania's accession to the European Union, the once deep bond between the two men turns into an irreconcilable enmity of fateful proportions. On the unstable deck of an Albanian cruise ship, a showdown occurs.
