Amalfi 1951: Claretta Lépore is in urgent need of work. Her husband Emilio has fallen in the war, and she must support their four sons on her own. Ironically, it is the Captain of the Carabinieri who eventually hires her as a secretary – despite the fact that she has never even learned to operate a typewriter. Where would she have learned, as a fisherman's daughter from a small village? But Claretta is as clever as she is bold, and Captain Spadaro is just happy if she cleans the office and irons his shirts. Claretta doesn’t know what this has to do with the duties of a secretary, but she cheerfully gets to work. Before she knows it, she finds herself in the middle of her first case: Two bodies have been found in a remote farmhouse: dairy farmer Carmela Maria De Rosa and her husband Tommaso were stabbed to death – with a crucifix, no less. Claretta is almost taken aback when Spadaro dictates the report to her. After work, she goes to the crime scene to get a better picture herself – and uncovers some inconsistencies that could be useful to the Captain in solving the case.
