Shadow demons pollute the city's water reservoir, and Caleb Altemoc - casual gambler and professional risk manager - is tasked with cleaning up the damage. At the scene of the crime, he meets Crazy Mal, who is as seductive as she is clever, and she nimbly outranks him. But demons and pretty women are not the only challenges Caleb faces, as his father - the last priest of the old gods - seems to be involved in the attacks on the city's water supply.
