Barbarically Wild Marvel Classic
The success of Conan's first comic book series at Marvel led the House of Ideas to make the fantasy icon a star of a black-and-white comic magazine in the 1970s. Marvel's magazines did not require the Comics Code on the cover – the seal of the Comics Code Authority indicated that a publisher refrained from violence, eroticism, drugs, and monsters in its issues after comics were branded as harmful to youth by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham in 1954.
Marvel's fantasy magazines Savage Tales and shortly thereafter The Savage Sword of Conan were not subject to these regulations and were as free and wild as the Cimmerian! The legendary creatives like Roy Thomas and John Buscema could portray Conan exactly as they saw fit. The framework of The Savage Sword of Conan even allowed previously modified stories adapted to the Comics Code by exceptional artist Barry Windsor-Smith to be presented in their original versions for the first time – all in glorious black and white!
From the very beginning, The Savage Sword of Conan was the stage for established artist greats and exciting talents who would themselves become masters. The contrasting grayscale images highlight the skills of the artists and inkers, leaving readers in awe with every stroke – not to mention the vividly painted and eye-catching covers! And of course, the artists knew how to take advantage of their freedoms regarding brutality and sensuality...
Meanwhile, Conan battles beasts, sorcerers, giants, and more.
