Product details

The thrilling struggle for the Matterhorn. The Matterhorn is not only the most famous peak but also a globally recognized symbol of Switzerland. Its first ascent is the greatest desire of many mountaineers. Around 3000 of them reach the summit every summer via the Hörnligrat, the easiest route to the top. The dramatic first ascent by Whymper and his companions on July 14, 1865 - after seven unsuccessful attempts by him and countless others - is one of the most exciting episodes in alpine history. The Englishman Edward Whymper and the Italian Luigi Carrel engaged in fierce competition for the honor of being the first to stand on the Matterhorn. Whymper paid for his summit victory with tragedy during the descent, which cost the lives of four of his companions and later led to severe accusations and judicial investigations.
