"I have been asked countless times to write an autobiography, but the right time has never come. Most of the time, I was raising children or on tour – neither of which is ideal when you want to concentrate for long periods. The only thing that always worked, whether at home or on the road, was writing songs. Once people reach a certain age, they like to refer back to diaries or calendars, recalling past events day by day, but I don't have such records. What I have are my songs – hundreds of them – and they actually serve the same purpose. They encompass my entire life, as I instinctively began writing songs at home in Liverpool when I got my first guitar at the age of fourteen. Since then, I haven't stopped."
Paul McCartney
In this extraordinary book, Paul McCartney reflects on his life and work through the prism of 154 of his own songs. Arranged in alphabetical order, these songs range from his earliest musical attempts to classics of pop history like "Hey Jude," "Yesterday," or "Let it Be," and up to his most recent compositions, creating an autobiographical kaleidoscope in which McCartney narrates the stories behind his songs, the people and places that have influenced him, and what he thinks about his songs today. In this way – a life in songs – a completely unique musician's memoir has emerged, making Paul McCartney's voice and personality palpable on every page. Previously unknown treasures from McCartney's private archive – sketches, letters, and especially photographs – also make "Lyrics" a visually unique document about one of the most successful musicians of the 20th century.
A life in 154 songs, enriched with personal texts, stories, private photos, and notes.
