England, 1660. King Charles II issues a general pardon through an Act of Indemnity. The exception is made for the regicides, those traitors who signed the death warrant for his father, Charles I. This includes Colonels Whalley and Goffe, who fought on the side of Oliver Cromwell during the Civil War. They manage to flee in time to the new colonies in America. There, the refugees encounter a society marked by puritanical fanaticism that is in the process of breaking away from the motherland across the Atlantic. Here, they could find safety among like-minded individuals, were it not for equally fanatical pursuers on their trail.
