Recently, the French coast has been flooded with counterfeit thousand-franc notes, and the local police suspect an English mastermind as the head of the counterfeiting operation. Indeed, the banknotes appear to come from Chalky Cobbett, an English forger of notorious talent. However, it's not just the counterfeit money that worries Meredith; a wealthy English widow, who hosts a series of mysterious houseguests in her picturesque villa in Menton, also piques his interest.
