Product details
Internal combustion engines (ICE) still have potential for significant improvements, particularly regarding fuel efficiency and environmental compatibility. To fully exploit the remaining margins, increasingly sophisticated control systems need to be applied. This book provides an introduction to cost-effective model-based control design for ICE. The focus is on the ICE and its auxiliary devices. Mathematical models for these processes are developed, and solutions for selected feedforward and feedback control problems are presented.
Discussions about pollutant emissions and fuel consumption of ICE in automotive applications have increased since the publication of the first edition of this book. Concerns about air quality, limited fossil fuel resources, and the harmful effects of greenhouse gases have sparked interest in further improvements in both industry and academia.
The key changes and additions in this second edition include: a restructured and slightly expanded chapter on compressors, a brief section on rotational vibrations and their treatment on engine test benches, a complete section on modeling, detection, and control of knocking, an improved physical and chemical model for the three-way catalyst, a new methodology for designing an air-fuel ratio controller, and a brief introduction to thermodynamic engine cycle calculations and corresponding control-oriented aspects.
