"Job" was Roth's first resounding success as an author and, together with the "Radetzky March," published a year later, represents the artistic pinnacle of his work. The humble teacher Mendel Singer experiences great suffering, turns against his God, and only finds his way back to faith at the end of his life in America after a miraculous reunion with his son, whom he believed to be dead. Not only does the "novel of a simple man," as the subtitle suggests, depict an exemplary fate, but it also serves as a monument to the destroyed culture of the East European Jewish Shtetl. The text follows the 1930 book edition. An afterword and a completely new commentary provide assistance in understanding, especially the Jewish background.
