Haruki Murakami, born in 1949 in Kyoto, is one of the most important contemporary writers. His novel "Norwegian Wood" divided the Literary Quartet, and with "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle," he wrote the cult book of his generation. He lived for an extended period in Europe and the USA. Murakami is an internationally celebrated author, awarded the highest Japanese literary prizes for numerous novels and stories. He has translated the works of Raymond Chandler, John Irving, Truman Capote, and Raymond Carver into Japanese.
