Product details

The modern Turkey emerged from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. After the establishment of the Republic in 1923, the country developed within a few generations into the most populous and economically strongest state in the region. Klaus Kreiser describes the political, social, economic, and cultural development of the country and explains the key domestic and foreign policy tensions that keep the country on edge today: the growing influence of Islam, the treatment of minorities and refugees, Turkey's role in the Syrian civil war, and its relationship with European neighbors. The Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923 on the remnants of the Ottoman Empire and immediately set out culturally, economically, and politically towards Europe. Klaus Kreiser illustrates how the multi-ethnic empire was transformed into a nation-state in a very short time and what tensions arose from this. To this day, Turkey's unique position between East and West – as an undisputed part of the Islamic world while also being integrated into the West – leads to various conflicts, both within the country and in relation to neighbors and partners.
