Fegefeuer

When Aliide Tru, an old woman living alone in a farmhouse in the Estonian countryside, discovers a bundle in her garden that turns out to be a young woman, she swallows her skepticism and disdain for humanity and takes Zara into her home. Zara is on the run from her pimps, who have forced her into submission with brutal violence and are hot on her heels. However, Zara is not seeking refuge with Aliide as randomly as she believes: Aliide could be her grandmother's sister.

While Zara searches for evidence of their kinship and a way to leave Estonia, Aliide feels threatened by the young woman: she has had to protect her body and soul, her belongings, from intruders too many times. Through flashbacks, a clearer picture emerges of a family tragedy that reached its peak nearly fifty years ago when Estonia was occupied by the Russians. Rivalry and jealousy, shame, vulnerability, and above all, fear of men's brutality towards women—these are the motives that forced Aliide into unimaginable decisions.
