Sisters Enne and Suse grow up in the 1970s in a village in Vorpommern, where there is hardly more than the bike ferry to Usedom, and it is so remote that strangers sometimes fear they might "tip over the edge." Suse is often ill, and Enne has to take a back seat because their parents' care and attention are primarily directed towards Suse, which complicates the relationship between the two sisters. There are only a few moments of closeness between them. When Hungary opens its borders in 1989, Suse seizes the opportunity and disappears into the West. She never contacts them again, and the family spends decades wondering what happened to her. Enne tries to make it as an actress in Berlin, but her big breakthrough never comes, and she returns to her hometown. Thirty years after Suse's disappearance, a mysterious woman named Pohl moves in across from Enne, and rumors about her identity begin to swirl.
In "Eine andere Zeit," Helga Bürster tells the story of one who stayed behind. She repeatedly reflects on the aftermath of the reunification, on disappearance and permanence, on identity and identity loss.
