A Norwegian valley in 1880: the young pastor Kai Schweigaard wants to build a new church in Butangen. The 700-year-old stave church has to go. And with it the two bells, to which supernatural powers are attributed. And they have to stay together for better or worse - like the two Hekne sisters, Siamese twins, in whose memory they were donated long ago. "One day you will bleed for this," prophesies the Hekne descendant Astrid, who pleads in vain for the preservation of the pair of bells. Misfortune takes its course. Astrid dies in childbirth after giving birth to twins, of whom supposedly only one survives, Jehan. The priest is plagued by guilt. How can the pair of bells be won back? Legend has it that only two "successor brothers", twins?, can reunite the bells.
Butangen in 1903: Jehan lives as a farmer in modest circumstances. He is drawn to freedom, fishing and reindeer hunting. One morning in August he kills a huge reindeer buck - and at that moment he meets a mysterious stranger.
