Ein eigenes Zimmer

A Room of One's Own', written in 1929, did not appear in German translation until 1978, under the title 'Ein Zimmer für sich allein'. In her own narrative-essayistic way, Virginia Woolf takes up a whole series of questions about women and literature that moved her and her time: Why do daughters from educated homes not have the same opportunities for university education as their brothers? Why is literature about women written almost exclusively by men? If Shakespeare had had a sister as gifted as he was, how would she have fared? What could female writing look like in the present? What do women need in order to be artistically active: a certain degree of financial, but above all spiritual independence, symbolized by a room of their own.
