Author's Text
Peter Bichsel was born on March 24, 1935, in Lucerne and grew up as the son of a craftsman in Olten from 1941. He trained as a primary school teacher at the teacher training college in Solothurn. In 1956, he married the actress Therese Spörri. He is the father of a daughter and a son. Until 1968, he worked as a primary school teacher. In 1964, he became famous overnight with his short stories in "Eigentlich möchte Frau Blum den Milchmann kennenlernen"; the Group 47 enthusiastically embraced him and awarded him their literary prize in 1965. Between 1974 and 1981, he served as a personal advisor to Federal Councillor Willi Ritschard, with whom he was friends. He was closely friends with the writer Max Frisch until Frisch's death in 1991. Since 1985, he has been a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin and a corresponding member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt. Bichsel lives in Bellach near Solothurn.

Blurb
"Eigentlich möchte Frau Blum den Milchmann kennenlernen" is the collection of reading pieces that is now considered a classic, in which the author has achieved something unique for his time and ours: to record everyday events in a laconic, almost emotionless, yet deeply observant and touching manner, extracting stories from them, each possessing the universality and depth of an epic.
