Product details

After the reunification, the roundish Rhinelander Altfried Janich finds a job in the "Ostschloss", a run-down baroque building, which recently housed a psychiatric institution. Here he considers it his task to take up the position of the sun in relation to his patients, to be their orientation and a source of comfort. When his friend Odilo is killed in a mysterious car accident, he himself gets on the night side of things. During the day the patients come too close to him, at night he ghosts through the rooms, memories crowd him, and his family history with its losses catches up with him. Altfried's whole life so far seems to be heading towards the situation in the castle: All stories end here, and soon the certainty arises that he will never get out of the castle.
Marion Poschmann's long-awaited new prose is a novel about Germany from the perspective of the wartime grandchildren. A novel about the power of time, about memory and timeless connectedness. A novel about fragile identities, about beautiful appearances and the search for the inner light sparkling, crystal clear and of subtle tension.
