Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582), Spanish founder of religious orders and mystic; through her work, numerous monasteries of a new branch of the Carmelite order (Teresian Carmel) were established. Pope Paul VI awarded her the title of "Doctor of the Church" in 1970, making her the first woman to receive this honor. The works of Teresa of Ávila are classics of Spanish literature.
