In spring 1966, Lila entrusted me, in a state of great excitement, with a tin box containing eight notebooks. She said she could no longer keep them at home, fearing her husband might read them. Lila and Elena are young and desperate. Lila learned on her wedding day that her husband is cheating on her – he is doing business with hated Camorristi. Born into poverty and suddenly thrust into wealth and status through marriage, Lila faces painful times ahead. Meanwhile, Elena falls head over heels for a young student, but he seems to be playing with her feelings. She has become a model student but must realize that what she has painstakingly achieved means little in her Neapolitan world. The only support these two women find is in their friendship, their love for each other feels boundless. If only they weren’t constantly driven by the burning desire to outdo one another.
