Paris, January 1793: The execution of Louis XVI under the guillotine is imminent, and a final attempt at his rescue fails. The dramatic phase of Jacobin rule begins, marked by intense political passions, counter-revolutionary conspiracies, and uprisings. The novel recounts the epochal event of the French Revolution from the perspective of the common people, the rebellious women, and the sections of the insurrectionary Commune of Paris. The authors experiment with stylistic elements of the historical novel in the tradition of Victor Hugo, characters from Commedia dell'arte, the coarse language of the common people in contemporary journalism, and a stage-worthy composition in the style of Ariane Mnouchkine's Théâtre du Soleil.
