1941 in Aspen, Colorado. 18-year-old Rachel competes in the ski championships. She doesn't win a medal, but she is pregnant when she returns to her home in New Hampshire. Her son Adam grows up in an unconventional family that avoids all questions about their troubled past. Years later, he therefore sets out to find answers in Aspen. At the Hotel Jerome, where he was conceived, Adam meets some ghosts. But they will be neither the first nor the last he sees.
